Sales & Marketing – Friends of Labor in 2010

This Labor Day is not like most – with economic uncertainty in the air, there is genuine fear that it will be a long time before our challenges are resolved.  This is not a time to sink back and feel sorry for ourselves but to reaffirm our collective commitment to the dignity of work and the importance it has in our society.  While many realize that United States is fighting an enemy that is different from those of the past, we also must continue to move on as a capitalistic society and innovate in ways that improve lives.    We must as a nation stop fighting amongst our selves and share in the prosperity that America still has to offer.  And not to trivialize what has just been said, organizations, through the leadership of Marketing and Sales,  must motivate workers to remain enthusiastic about the value of their product or service and about the value that each individual brings to the organization.

On this Labor Day in 2010, most people think of Salespeople and Marketers as white collared types within a corporate structure, Don Draper wannabes that don’t do much but spend the company’s money or pitch intangibles.   That should not be the case.  As this blog helps push the envelope to transform Marketing departments into network-centric organizations through labor saving tools such as Marketing Automation, it remains important to recognize some of the diverse, skilled workers that make support and comprise the Sales and Marketing ecosystem:

  • Copywriters
  • Graphic Designers
  • Web designers
  • Printers
  • Actors
  • Voiceover professionals
  • Mail fulfillment house workers
  • Survey takers
  • Animators
  • Video producers
  • Event planners
  • Caterers
  • Carpenters
  • Audio Engineers
  • Lighting Engineers
  • Customer Support staff
  • SEO/SEM professionals
  • Product managers
  • Postal workers
  • Proposal writers

While it may at first to seem like a wildly diverse and far-fetched list, admit it – Marketing and Sales have to do diverse and far-fetched things to get the job done, and require the types of workers listed above.  We are at war, figuratively speaking, against the worst recession we have have ever seen.  Positive attitude, innovation, and collaboration are the attributes that will get us out of it.  It will take work.  Work.  The continued hard work of all that can help a discipline, company, an industry, a nation grow.   So Happy Labor Day to all who help our profession!
